Today is World Communion Sunday — the one Sunday of the year when, by intention, Christians around the world break the same bread.
Paul’s letter to the Corinthians names the heart of what’s at stake at the table: that when we eat the bread and drink the cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death — but we also enact a politics. A politics of one body, many members. A politics in which the rich do not get to eat first while the poor go home hungry.
Communion is, among other things, a refusal of the kind of border that the State trades in. It is a meal where the only credential required is hunger.
