Jesus is sitting opposite the temple treasury, watching people drop money in. The rich come, throwing in large amounts. Then a poor widow comes and drops in two small copper coins, worth a penny.
And Jesus says — to his disciples, who are doubtless distracted by the spectacle of the rich — “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.”
This is one of the most subversive economic claims Jesus makes. Today, what it means.
